How to Prepare for HSK 5 in Six Months
HSK 5 is where the exam stops being about survival vocabulary and starts demanding something close to functional adult literacy. The official word count is 2,500, roughly double HSK 4. But the raw number undersells the gap. The reading passages get longer and denser, the listening runs at near-natural speed with no hand-holding, and the writing section now expects a real essay, not a few stitched-together sentences.
This plan assumes you already hold HSK 4 or are very close. If you are coming from lower, six months is not enough and anyone promising otherwise is selling something. For an HSK 4 holder studying consistently, six months at roughly an hour a day is a realistic, honest target.
The mindset shift matters as much as the hours. At HSK 4 you could often pass by recognizing words. At HSK 5 you have to actually read, understand inference, and produce coherent written Chinese. Passive recognition alone will stall your score.
