HSK study roadmap (1→6)
How the HSK levels stack up, sample paths from zero to HSK 6, and where to start — built on the HSK 3.0 standard.

Quick answer
HSK has 6 mainstream levels (1–6) plus the new advanced 7–9 band under HSK 3.0. Vocabulary climbs from ~500 words at HSK 1 to ~5,456 at HSK 6. A steady learner reaches HSK 3 in about 9–12 months and HSK 6 in roughly 3 years total. Start at HSK 1 if you’re new, or take a free mock exam to find your level.
The HSK 3.0 level ladder
| Level | Band | Vocabulary | Characters | Suggested time | What you can do |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | Elementary | 500 | 300 | ≈ 2–3 months | Greet people, introduce yourself, count, and use simple everyday sentences. |
| HSK 2 | Elementary | 1,272 | 600 | ≈ 3 months | Handle basic exchanges about family, shopping and time, and manage short familiar situations. |
| HSK 3 | Elementary | 2,245 | 900 | ≈ 4–5 months | Get by while travelling, follow everyday conversations and write short passages. The first widely recognized milestone (study abroad, jobs). |
| HSK 4 | Intermediate | 3,245 | 1,200 | ≈ 4–5 months | Discuss a range of topics, read general news, and write paragraphs on familiar themes. |
| HSK 5 | Intermediate | 4,316 | 1,500 | ≈ 6–8 months | Read newspapers and magazines, watch TV programs and write coherent texts; enough for most Chinese-using jobs. |
| HSK 6 | Intermediate | 5,456 | 1,800 | ≈ 8–10 months | Understand almost everything you hear and read, express yourself fluently, and summarize long texts. The top of the six-level range. |
Vocabulary and character counts are cumulative, per the HSK 3.0 standard. Suggested time assumes steady study of about one hour a day.

Beginner — from zero to HSK 3
≈ 9–12 months at ~1 hour/day
- Weeks 0–3: master pinyin and the four tones before any vocabulary.
- HSK 1–2: build your first ~1,200 words and 600 characters; practice short daily dialogues.
- HSK 3: reach ~2,245 words; start reading short texts and writing simple passages.
- Take a full mock exam before registering for the real HSK 3.
Intermediate — HSK 3 to HSK 6
≈ 18–24 months on top of HSK 3
- HSK 4: discussion topics, general news reading, paragraph writing (~3,245 words).
- HSK 5: newspapers, TV programs, coherent essays (~4,316 words).
- HSK 6: near-full comprehension and a long summary-writing task (~5,456 words).
- Run mock exams under timed conditions — the gap from HSK 5 to 6 is mostly stamina and reading speed.
Speaking — the HSKK track
Run in parallel with HSK
- HSKK Beginner: pronounce the four tones cleanly and speak simple sentences about yourself.
- HSKK Intermediate: tell a 2-minute story from a picture and answer open questions.
- HSKK Advanced: summarize a long passage and argue an abstract topic for 3 minutes.
- Practice speaking a few minutes daily — pronunciation needs time to settle.
HSK 2.0 vs 3.0, and the new 7–9 band
HSK 3.0 reorganizes the exam into 3 bands and 9 levels, with larger vocabulary lists and a new advanced 7–9 band beyond the old HSK 6. During the transition both systems run in parallel and existing HSK 2.0 certificates stay valid. The 7–9 band targets postgraduate and professional proficiency and is being rolled out gradually.

- Complete beginner: start at HSK 1 — learn pinyin and tones first.
- Some self-study already: take a free mock test, then start at the closest level.
- Need a recognized certificate for study or work: aim for HSK 3 or above.
- Want to balance speaking: add the HSKK track in parallel.
Roadmap FAQ
Which HSK level should I start with?
Complete beginners should start at HSK 1 to learn pinyin and the test format. If you have studied before, take a free mock test to gauge your level and start at the closest one. HSK 3 is the first widely recognized milestone, so many learners aim there.
How long does it take to go from HSK 1 to HSK 6?
For a steady learner at about one hour a day, reaching HSK 3 takes roughly 9–12 months, and HSK 6 a further 18–24 months on top — so around 3 years end to end. Pace depends on daily study time and regular review of mistakes.
Should I follow HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0?
Study toward the new HSK 3.0 standard, which has larger vocabulary lists and adds the advanced 7–9 band. Both systems share the same underlying knowledge and run in parallel during the transition, and HSK 2.0 certificates remain valid.
