Who actually asks for HSK 4
Three categories of employer ask for HSK 4 specifically:
1. Multinational companies hiring foreigners for China-based roles. Tech, finance, supply chain. The HSK 4 line is usually a soft filter — they want to know you can hold a basic meeting in Chinese, not that you can lead one. Most actual work happens in English, but HSK 4 is the proof that you put real time in.
2. Chinese companies hiring foreigners for client-facing roles abroad. Customer success, business development, account management for Chinese-speaking markets. Here HSK 4 is closer to a hard requirement — you will actually need to read emails in Chinese and reply to them.
3. Some Chinese universities for non-Chinese-medium graduate programs. Master's programs taught in English often ask for HSK 4 to prove you can survive day-to-day in Beijing or Shanghai outside the classroom. PhD programs sometimes accept HSK 4 with a plan to reach HSK 5 by the second year.
When HSK 5 is the better target
If you are going into a role where Chinese is the working language — not a supporting skill — HSK 4 is probably not enough. Chinese-medium master's programs, journalism, translation, or any role where you will read long-form Chinese documents will expect HSK 5 minimum.
HSK 5 doubles the vocabulary to 2,500 words and adds a much harder essay section. The gap from HSK 4 to HSK 5 is similar to the gap from HSK 3 to HSK 4 — six to twelve months of focused study for most adult learners.
