No. In the official HSK 3.0 sample papers (September 2026), Bands 1 and 2 have no speaking test, Bands 3 to 6 each have their own speaking test, and Bands 7 to 9 include speaking in the main exam. Writing starts at Band 2.

Recognition is supported — the word is in front of you and you only confirm meaning — while production is unsupported: you retrieve the word, the tone, the grammar and the character from memory in real time. Most learners who skipped output have a passive vocabulary several times larger than what they can use.

Read a passage you already understand aloud daily, describe your day out loud for two minutes without worrying about stumbling, record yourself and listen back for tone errors you cannot feel while speaking, and get scored feedback instead of guessing.

You need to produce them, which is harder than picking the right character from four options. Practise character production rather than recognition, respect stroke order so characters come out fast and legible, and write short real sentences instead of copying.
