So "Mandarin" is the branch; "Putonghua" is the official standard within that branch. In everyday English the two are used interchangeably, and that is fine.
Putonghua was formalised in the 1950s, drawing its pronunciation from Beijing speech, its grammar from modern written vernacular literature, and its vocabulary from northern dialects broadly. The goal was practical: give a country with hundreds of local varieties one spoken standard everyone could learn in school.
