Guessing Words You Don't Know in HSK Reading
No matter how much you study, you will meet characters you do not know on the HSK reading paper. That is not a sign you are underprepared — it is built into the exam. Passages are written to include some words above your level so the test can separate candidates who panic from those who keep reading.
The skill that matters is not knowing every character. It is staying calm and pulling enough meaning out of the ones around it to answer the question. Strong readers in any language do this constantly without noticing.

Read the radical for a clue
Most Chinese characters contain a component that hints at meaning. You will not get a precise definition this way, but you can often get the category, which is frequently all you need.
