How to Go From HSK 1 to HSK 2

If you passed HSK 1, you have proven you can recognize 150 words and follow slow, repetitive listening. HSK 2 is the next step, and it is a genuine step, not a formality. The word count doubles to 300, the listening speeds up, and grammar starts to matter in a way it simply did not at HSK 1. The good news is that the foundation transfers directly. You are extending what you already have, not starting over.

Most people make the jump in about eight to ten weeks if they keep the same daily habit that got them through HSK 1. The structure of HSK 2 is friendly: pinyin is still printed on the test, and there is still no handwriting section. What changes is that you now have to understand how words relate to each other, not just what each one means.

The vocabulary jump: 150 to 300

You are adding another 150 words on top of the ones you already know. The new words are heavier on verbs, adjectives, and time and place expressions, which is what lets you describe situations instead of just naming things.
