Update, October 2026: The HSK 3.0 exam syllabus (November 2025) uses different word counts from the table below: 300 for Band 1, 1,000 for Band 3, 2,000 for Band 4 and 5,400 for Band 6, all cumulative. On these numbers, old HSK 4 (about 1,200 words) still sits between new Bands 3 and 4. The HSK 3.0 score scale and pass marks have not been published yet, so "180/300" here is only an old-format example; see HSK 3.0 starts December 13, 2026.
The most common question when moving to HSK 3.0: "What is my old HSK 4 worth now?" Straight answer: there is no official 1:1 score conversion — HSK 3.0 changed both the vocabulary scale and the band structure. But you can place yourself accurately by vocabulary size.
